I received my new Laguna LT14 SUV bandsaw but...

Hi All,
I received a new Laguna LT14 SUV bandsaw today via UPS Freight. The pallet that the saw sat on was very flimsy and all the 4 bolts that bolted the saw to the pallet all bent up and came lose. However, there is no visible damage to the saw so I accepted and have the driver note it on the paper. Upon installing the saw, I found that the motor was damage. One of the cover was messed up. It probably still works but I file a claim to Amazon anyway. One of the "damage" that I am not sure about is the upper part of the saw that cave in like the picture I am attaching. Maybe it's just the design that lock the cover of the upper wheel. Can someone with this same saw tell me if it's damage?
TIA
Mike

SawStop (5HP) & Oneida V-3000

Everyone, I had this sold, but the sale fell through (no fault of the buyer). So it is back on the market. I will offer it for what I offered to him.

$5000 takes the SawStop and dust collector

Oneida V-3000 with Norfab Ducting. I think it is about $1000 in duct work plus the $1500 dust collector. I will let it all go for $1800 or best offer

SawStop 5hp ICS 230v single phase. Retails about $4800. I will include 2 WWII blades, a Dado-King. and an excaliber over arm guard with dust collection. The saw has 52" fence rails. I will also include all my alignment tools (plates, dial indicator, etc)

I also have a Steel City 1hp band saw for $500 (negotiable).

How many centers do you use in your headstock?

I'm completely new to turning, but hoping to start as soon as I get my lathe in my shop.

The problem is that I've got a nonstandard taper (I think it's a Jarno #5). While I can fit MT2 stuff in there and it's snug, it sticks out a couple inches.

Getting the headstock reamed to MT2 will be very expensive. Getting the tailstock done will only cost about $70.

I can probably get some used Jarno taped stuff off the internet, or have tapers machined down to it (assuming they're not hardened, anyway...).

I'm trying to figure out if it's worth my while. How many centers or drives do you use in your headstock?

9" x 4" Walnut Bowl Step by Step

Hello everybody once again I've had a few people ask me to show how I am able to turn the projects
I've been posting. This is a simple Walnut bowl except that one of the pieces has a large knot almost to the edge
where I'll be cutting.
I had to lay this up just right so when cut / turned all voids were gone; I start w/ 2 - 9" x 9" plus blanks and miter off the extra after drawing an X and the circle. (I"ll show how I do this)
I'll try to explain w/ each posting of photos; if I had a video camera I would post a video my camera shoots very short videos only.
I hope this helps you guys & gals that are new to turning I'm have a blast doing these projects and have a great number of ideas yet to try, so I hope you stick around and ask questions.

Bruce

The first set will show prepping the blank to mount on the lathe after coming out of the glue press after 24 hrs.

What are you charging/paying for plywood parts cutting?

I've a run of five identical pieces to make, and the work involves simple straight-line parts cut from 3/4" and 1/2" cherry-veneer plywood. My parts nest nicely into two sheets of 3/4 and one sheet of 1/2.

My hardwood and panel supplier, Austin Hardwoods of Denver, says they can put me in touch with various shops with CNC machines, and I am wondering in advance, about what to budget for this.

A few years back, a partner and I did a bunch of kitchens, and I used Thermwood's eCabinets software to batch up the jobs, emailing our suppliers the CNC-ready job files for cutting the carcase parts from melamine-faced particleboard. We routinely bought jobs in the size range 25 to 35 sheets. Big kitchen jobs.

It was quite cost-effective, but there was never any CAD or programming time required. The files we sent were the files that went straight to machine.

So what is this going to be like?

Camphor Tree Roots

We are cutting down a Camphor Tree at work because of roots invading a sewage pipe. The company doing the work does not think it is necessary to grind the stump. (But they are grinding the stump of a pine tree that is lifting a sidewalk.)

Does anyone know whether Camphor roots keep causing problems after the tree is cut down?

Sorby Tools - Are They All HSS?

I obtained a collection of 8 Sorby tools with my lathe. None of them have HSS on the tool steel marked anywhere. They seem pretty tough to grind (I re-profiled a scraper) but the bowl gouge will turn blue fairly easily when sharpening. The bowl gouge also cuts very nicely for the first 2-3 passes when it has a nice bur on it then it quickly dulls. The tools I believe were purchased about 10 years ago. Would tools of this vintage be made from non-HSS? If they were HSS would they have been marked as such back then?

I'm just trying to figure out if I'm expecting too much from an excellent tool, or if I possibly have merely a good tool?

Opinions on the NEW Stanley 750 chisels

I have a credit that I can use with Amazon and I've been considering spending it on a set of the new Stanley "sweetheart" 750 socket chisels. I realize that these are not the same quality as LN. I've been happily using Maprles blue chips for some time. If money were no object, I'd buy the LN. As a hobby woodworker, I doubt I will see any practical difference. But in this case, I'd be buying a set just because I'd enjoy the look and feel.

The credit is specific to Amazon and so I'm limited to their offerings, so AI chisels or 1/2 set of LN is not an option. It's probably the 750s or nothing.

I like the handle shape. Without actually using one I think the shape of the handles would fit my hand well. Being slightly more bulbous than the LN, I think they may be a better fit. I can't really gauge the weight an balance. They are lighter and slight thinner that the LN but I'm not sure how that compares to chisels I've actually used.

From what I could dig up, the common report is that they come reasonably flat often with a slight concave face. So setup will be more than LN but probably far less than I'm accustomed to.

I'll be using them as standard bench chisels to chop dovetails, pare shoulders and even chop mortises, etc; a general purpose workhorse set.

I'd be really interested to hear from anyone who's used these.

Question about Titebond Wood Glue

A friend and I were talking last night about glue ups on table tops ect... We were discussing the time it takes to spread the glue over a large area in order to get it clamped up before the wood glue starts to set up. We have rolled it on and brushed it on. This is not a major issue as I am not a production shop but he posed a question that I would like to have answered.

He said why don't you just get a spray pot and spray the glue on? I have never even thought about that and my initial thought was well the glue would be to thick to use a spray pot.

Has anyone had any experience with this using a Titebond 2 or 3 out of a spray pot hooked up to a compressor?

Thanks in advance for your input.

I have been turning pens and bowls for several years but recently decided to try my hand at hollow forms.

Wow, this is really addicting! I like the additional options I now have to consider when looking at a piece of raw wood.

After practicing with my hollowing system for a few days, here are the first 'real' pieces I am actually proud of.

FS Knapp Signature Series Saw Shaper Jointer Planer Mortiser

Knapp Signature series Saw-Shaper and Jointer-Planer with mortiser attachment used occasionally in a home shop by a single user-hobbyist. Shaper and mortiser have never been used. 3 phase.

Slider is 118 inch so 4x8 plywood can be cut in half or along the 8 ft length on the slider. Comes with many accessories: high speed router attachment (new, never used), 2 saw support tables (as shown on saw), several extension tables, swing arm for shaper feeder, tenoning attachment, parallel fence, long and short crosscut fence, and separate scoring blade for the saw, upgraded Wigo cutter head for the jointer-planer (4 easy change knives similar to Tersa), and mobility kit.

I purchased the equipment new in 2002-3 from Laguna Tools. I live in Palos Verdes just south of Los Angeles International (LAX) airport. I wanted the jointer cuts to be more accurate and recently had the equipment inspected and adjusted by a technician who previously worked at Laguna and once visited the Knapp factory as he was most qualified to perform the service. The saw has a new Forrest 40T carbide blade (the original only recently started to dull).

There are no paint scratches or other problems with the equipment with the only slight exception begin that on the outfeed end of the slider, the end cap was removed by Laguna to enhance the full extension of the slider for blade changes, and in doing so, they created a slight bend in a 1 inch area of the end piece. I will take pictures and send them to you if you would like to see it. Not to make a big deal out of something so minor, but that is to emphasize that this equipment is in excellent condition.

I am selling this equipment because I am buying Martin equipment with a separate saw and shaper. In case you were not aware, although Knapp in my opinion made the best combination woodworking equipment ever made, the company is no longer in business. I can not provide any warranty. Anyone interested is welcome to contact me to arrange a demonstration.

The buyer will need to arrange pickup as I am not able to crate and ship the machinery. $7,900

So, What is Your...

...Favorite comic series of all time?

Over the years I have enjoy a number of them, even reading Prince Valiant when I was a kid back in the dark ages. My second favorite is probably Far Side by Gary Larson. The one I never forget has two polar bears surrounding an igloo with a hole in the top. One says to the other, 'I just love these things. Crunchy on the outside with chewy middle.' I would have posted it, but Larson is extremely picky about digital rights and it would be a violation to post it.

My favorite though has long been Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson. It was simply so funny and off the wall. I could really identify with Calvin's Dad. I have the complete set of the ten years he did the strip. Unlike many that should have stopped years before they did, Bill should have kept writing for another ten years.

What is/are you favorite strips?

Should Polished Plastic Pieces Be Clear Coated?

I'm asking this here because it applies to all the plastic parts on hand tools and machines. I'm restoring some hand planes that have plastic parts. I've sanded and polished the plastic parts and now I'm wondering if I should cover them with a clear coat of something or just leave them unprotected. It seems other plastic parts on machines of mine have had some kind of clear coat, but they are awaiting my decision to coat or not.
If they should be clear coated, what would you recommend I use?

Burr Grinder Died

So our burr grinder died last night. After grinding beans the night before, after about 45 minutes, it turned itself on again -yikes! I unplugged it for the night and yesterday it would not run properly. I'll try to fix it but I am not hopeful. I think the circuit board died.

So in the event I can't fix it, I am seeking information on a replacement. Preface, LOML & I are probably coffee snobs by many's standards. It will be used for 7 drip (cone, not flat bottomed) grinds per week and probably 5 espresso grinds. So the grinder needs to work at the extremes with appropriate adjustability.

So any recommendations?

Leg Levelars

I don't know if this is the correct place to post this, so excuse me if it is not. After I get my current project done of finishing the trim work and bench in the new wood shop I am going to build my assembly/outfeed table. I have purchased a Rockler t track table top which will be the main part. Would like to have a part with miter slots for a crosscut sled to slide into. I have purchased workbench casters which raise the table to move and then lower to the floor when in place. I am not completely sure of my ability to get the finished table the exact height to match the table saw so was thinking I need something adjustable on the bottom of the legs to make sure I get to the exact height. What would you suggest? It doesn't have to have a lot of adjustment and once set would stay as the floor is pretty good but would have to be strong enough to hold up the table.

Grizzly G0440 dustbin vacuum for liner hold-down, does it work?

I did an archive search for this and found only one thread reference and no comments on its performance. At the risk of being redundant, does the Cyclone vacuum tube and hose attachment in fact equalize the pressure between the cyclone and dust bin units sufficient to keep the bag from being sucked up into the cyclone? Has anyone modified their existing cyclones to try this out? Parenthetically, I don't see other manufacturers jumping on board with this feature which makes me wonder about whether it works or not.

Cabinet Saw Stability

I'm planning on building a "saw station" for my SawStop PCS cabinet saw, much like saw stations that are frequently built for contractor's and benchtop saws. My question relates to the casters. Do y'all think that locking casters will provide enough stability when using the saw (note that the weight of the entire saw station will likely be over 600 lbs), or should I look at some method of firmly planting the station when it's cuttin' time.

A better wedge

I was attempting to split a 8x25" white oak log with a friend last week. The L&N froe was not enough. Most wedges lack the bevel needed to penetrate wood like this. I have sen wedges used by guys like Curtis Buchanan that are longer and wider than the average wedge available today. The bevel on the type wedge I am talking about is more gradual allowing it to penetrate hard wood easier. I have searched auctions and places that sell wedges but so far I have not come up with something comparable at a reasonable price or even at an unreasonable price. I was wondering if any of my fellow SMC posters might have any idea where to buy such a wedge?

Wooden smoother

As part of my plan to make a 6 foot long cooper's jointer, I decided to make a smoother for practice. I didn't want to spend any money on the project since it was practice and I wasn't sure how it would turn out so I used a piece of firewood and the iron and chipbreaker from my Stanley #4. I followed along Bill Anderson's plane making video as I progressed through the steps.

side.jpg top.jpg back.jpg

I think the wood is spalted soft maple. I like the way it looks, but it probably isn't ideal plan making wood. It works pretty well, though. I'm still working on learning how to adjust the iron, but when I get it right it shoots up long flat shavings. The picture below shows a shaving from a piece of hard maple. I normally get a curlier shaving with my #4. The bed angle is 50 degrees and maybe the higher angle is creating the flatter shavings?

shaving.jpg

Given that the plane actually works I feel like I am ready to tackle the cooper's jointer. I have ordered some 12/4 hard maple (couldn't find any beech) and custom 3.25" wide Hock blade. It'll probably be a month or two until I get the iron so I'll have to find something else to work on in the meantime :-).

I like when online news sources publish old images.

Quote:

In the 1850s, two men named George S. Lawrence and Thomas Houseworth left the California gold mines to open a shop in San Francisco. Their optical shop sold a number of goods, like mathematical instruments, cutlery, billiard balls and chalk. In 1859, they added to their store in a monumental and historic way. This is REPOST question

Remember I asked a question about a project where I have a graphic that is supposed to be cut out in a circle. I attempted to type an example. Someone suggested that I export it as a jpeg to place here. Thank you, here it is.

In the drawing the the crest is in the middle3:75 RGT.jpg
I vectorized this graphic then drew a circle around it so the graphic is centered on the lower side and I put an 8 mm hole at top. The graphic was set at 40mmx40mm and the circle @ 60mmx60mm. I sent the graphic to engraving first, then the cut circle.
The engraving started fine and when finished the cut started on the R of the RANGER. Moving from left top to left bottom. In other words it started cutting the through the left side of the graphic, not as it looked on screen.

So I attempted to move the Circle as in the attached and that helped but it seems like I should not need to do something like that to get the cut to do what I need.

Any ideas on what setting or command I am missing/not setting that is causing this very consistent problem?

15 or 16 gauge nail gun

My 16 gauge nail gun broke down today.
I used my 18 gauge, but would rather have used the 16 gauge for this project. I will need to buy a new one soon as I use it a lot. I don't know much about them so would appreciate any info you can provide. First - 15 or 16 gauge? I don't have an angled nail gun, but can see how it might be useful. Second - recommendations on brand? The one I had was Rigid. I see pretty good reviews for Dewalt and have a few Dewalt tools that I like and there is a Bostitch model that looks pretty nice (N62FNK-2, I think) but I am open to suggestions.

My Homemade Brute Captive Hollower

Last spring I bought the "Monster" Articulated hollower and I'm really having fun with that. I wanted to order the captive portion, but the website say's they won't take orders until Oct. and they are taking a break to catch up. Decided to just make one and use the Monster cutter bits and laser. This is the completed, unpainted version so far. I will paint it up after I actually try it out just in case I need to modify something. This is just about the maximum size and still have it on the ways, so I may have got a bit carried away on that issue. Will cut up to 30" deep and just need a steady rest to hold the longer vessels now.

It was fun to make, $58.00 materials, (I had the 1/4 steel plate for the ways) 9 hrs time.
