Compact fluorescent lights vs commercial strips?

My shop is in Monroe, NC and the climate allows me to open the 16' wide door about 9 months of the year. It is not air conditioned but I have a 240 volt ceiling mounted heater that warms it up comfortably on all but the coldest days which are few in number.

Has anyone used used CFL's in a similar climate and can speak to their durability and temperature ratings?

If I end up with strips I will use ones with commercial ratings.
