New DC or upgrade the old one?

I am in the process of building a new 3-bay garage to house my woodworking shop. My shop has always been in the basement of whatever house I was living in, and dust collection has always been somewhat of an issue. I always thought that all of the machine connections and duct work necessary for really efficient dust collection was cost prohibitive, and so I usually just connected my DC or shop vac to whatever tool I was using and cleaned up afterwards.

Now, I find myself with the ability to do this right from the beginning. I have the ability to run ducting overhead (10' ceilings!) or under the floor slab, and I can either get a new DC or stick with the old one. My existing DC is a Shop Fox W1666, 2HP, 240v unit. It gets used as a giant shop vac, pretty much. I have the Rockler Dust-Right fittings on my machines and I just swap the hose from machine to machine when I need to.

So I have been looking at the Clear Vue cyclones and other cyclones from various manufacturers, and I am wondering - rather than spend ~$1500 on a new machine, what would it do for me to set my existing DC up "correctly"? I thought that if I could set up a garbage can separator, retrofit the existing DC with a Wynn filter and clear bag on the bottom, and install proper ducting, I could get nearly the performance of an average cyclone. Ironically, I feel as though I won't need as much dust collection anymore since I will be moving the shop to an outbuilding where dust won't matter. At the same time, though, I am finding that fine dust particles are affecting me far more than they used to. I can only stand at the table saw or sand for a few minutes before the dust gets too much to breathe anymore. Plus it gets all over the house.

Has anyone else considered the pros and cons of an "upgrade" to their existing conventional DC, have you made the upgrades? And if so, how did it work out for you?
